Sultan Muhammad ke- 5

taken from NST

THE Crown Prince of Kelantan was proclaimed as the state's new Sultan, in the latest twist to a royal succession saga that promises to continue.

Tengku Muhammad Faris, 40, takes over from his father, Ismail Petra, 61, who has been in poor health since suffering a heart attack last year.

The decision was made by the state's Council of Succession, which determines who ascends the throne.

It had reportedly invoked an amended article in the state Constitution, which allows the council to appoint a new ruler if the incumbent is incapacitated for a period of more than one year.

The proclamation was made by Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat, in the presence of lawmakers and palace officials. He said the council's decision was made yesterday morning.

But the handover of power is almost certain to be disputed.
